“In Between” was born as the guiding concept for analyzing and giving answer to the actual conditions and deficiencies of the north area of Modena. Going through different scales the in between condition was a recurrent characteristic. Moreover the sequence of historical events, plans and transformations produced a fragmented area where three proposed types of in between could be recognized.
The Master plan was based on specific strategies:
1. Four spines going in north-south direction to link the area with its surroundings and overcome the main barriers. Each spine is characterized by specific topics;
2. Two systems were proposed grounded on the city’s history and the area pre-existences to connect the scattered elements:
- A local system aims to regenerate and link the existent neighborhoods through open spaces and equipment for the improvement of the local living quality;
- A production heritage system to attract new inhabitants and revitalize the local economy on the basis of the promotion of events, touristic circuits and new creative-craft productions.
The overlapping of the these systems determines the main transformation and regeneration areas, which coincide with the footprint of the Central Spine and try to give answer to the main voids and interrupted projects in the area. Several on-site project proposals were defined, working on the open space and the existent fabric, considering a step by step approach, and focusing mainly on temporal and small interventions.
