The Eastern Market of Genova, inaugurated on the 2nd of June 1899 inside the cloister linked with the Convento Nostra Signora della Consolazione and first building built in Genova with the Hennebique System, is the most ancient covered market of Genova, located in via XX Settembre, the historical street of the shopping in the city. Actually the management is mixed, with the management of the public service given to a Consortium that provide the maintenance, while the Municipality keeps the title of the management and the collection of the rent, a part of which is paid to the Consortium.
Always a point of reference for the people of Genova, the market had great development possibilities also from a touristic point of view, but it fell in a state of degradation since a long time. Because of this, the public local administration, in the beginning of 2016, decided to make an intervention, recovering the structure on the first floor with a conservative restoration.
Here will be created the first food market of the city of Genova, with a surface of 2.000 m², more than three hundred sitting places below a wonderful glass lantern, a central bar and various corner where to try products from Italy but with a particular interest for products coming from the local territories of Liguria and Genova. The mezzanine, created on purpose, will hosts a kitchen school, a space for cultural meetings and events and a centre of professional education for nutritionists.
A news for Genova which in this way aligned itself with other Italian and European cities like the Boqueria in Barcelona, the Borough Market in London, the Mercado of San Miguel in Madrid and the Mercato Centrale in Firenze. The construction working that interested the raised floor have been: the renewal of the walls; the renovation of the pavements and the stairs for the access; the realization of new plant system and of new toilet services; the necessary work to remove architectonic barrier; the restoration of the main windows on the perimeter and the creation of a path to be activated when the market downstairs is closed.
The end of the work is predicted for the Spring of 2018 and the total cost of the intervention should be 3.000.000 Euro.
