In recent years, the European Union has launched a series of strategies to deal with climate change and environmental degradation. The most recent European Green Deal aims to make the European economy sustainable through a full transition to a green economy, investing in actions to stimulate resource efficiency, halt climate change, reduce pollution and biodiversity loss. The recent pandemic has further contributed to accelerate the transition towards economic models with better environmental and social sustainability and to catalyze the various processes already underway. This is the background to the recently approved National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), which is of particular importance both for the economic recovery of our country and for its future development. Among the plan’s strategic lines and missions, significant investments directly concern cities and territories. The ecological reconversion of the production system (including building production), the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings, the regeneration of the territory in the context of limiting soil consumption, the effective management of green areas (reforestation, sustainable agriculture), the protection of Italy’s ‘beauty’ (cultural and natural heritage), equity and social and territorial inclusion (social innovation).
In the light of the most recent tools and available financial resources, the seminar intends to deepen the concept of value and assessment models to support public decision-making processes in the definition of policies and actions aimed at supporting the transition and guiding the development of cities and territories.
