Climate change has now been unanimously defined as one of the most problematic scientific and political issues of the 21st century. In the last two decades, there has been a growing interest in the role of both national and local government bodies within climate governance processes. Global experiences and industry literature have identified compelling possibilities for climate governance through experimentation with innovative urban planning processes and tools, which promise to advance the global climate response, despite international political stagnation.
With this in mind, the session aims to contribute to the debate on the role of urban planning tools prepared by public administrations within the global climate governance framework, reflecting on opportunities, limits and territorial policies as agents of change.
Therefore, starting from the examination at all scales of initiatives implemented or under construction, the session aims to stimulate reflection on where understanding and practice need improvements to advance the role of urban planning in the national and international panorama of the government of the territory. The key questions that are addressed by the session will try to consider: to what extent do the implemented experiences confirm or disregard the expectations of cities and territories as agents and sites of change in dealing with global climate change? How do political dynamics allow or limit climateproof territorial processes? How is climate governance in cities enabled and limited by interactions with wider levels of governance?
