THE DIGITAL CITY

With this workshop Urbanpromo intends to explore a fascinating approach to the study and design of the city. The exploration aims to verify the possibility of creating an annual event of analysis, proposal and dissemination of innovations that make use of artificial intelligence, as well as human intelligence. The occasion is created by a fortuitous meeting with the Cariplo Foundation’s MEET Digital Culture Center.
Cities are not just places to live. They are also powerful creative devices to activate the diverse present and explore the possible future if they allow a community life that builds fruitful relationships, generates fertile synapses, produces new economies and accelerates innovation. When, on the other hand, they are fragmented places of inequality, spaces of unresolved conflict and generators of marginality, they lose their co-evolutionary function with humanity.
The challenge of the most responsible and innovative urban planning, generative and circular, is to design dynamic and not stationary, circular and not dissipative cities, generating values and not erosive of quality. Cities that consume less land, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, that do not erode natural and cultural resources, that pursue strategies that are more sensitive to the context and guided and implemented by the community.
The city, understood as a place of enhancement of the collective intelligence of its inhabitants, therefore, calls for a paradigm shift capable of producing a new vision of its mission and its ability to generate an enabling ecosystem based on the hardware provided by the new quality of spaces and infrastructures and on the software constantly updated by active citizenship, but above all equipped with a new “operating system” consisting of advanced urban planning and urban policies, capable of responding to the changing demands of the contemporary world.

Architect, former President of the Inu and Full Professor of Estimo at the Iuav University of Venice, he has directed his most recent work on the multidimensional feasibility of urban projects.

Piergiorgio Monaci MEET Digital Culture Center - Cariplo Foundation

He has held various management positions at the Province and Municipality of Milan, promoting and coordinating projects on technological innovation, start-up and creative industries, social housing and urban regeneration. He has collaborated with various research institutes. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of development agencies and innovation centres.

Maurizio Carta University of Palermo

He runs the Augmented City Lab dedicated to the cities of the near future. In 2015 the International Architecture Biennale of Buenos Aires awarded him an award for his studies on urban regeneration. He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications, the latest book is Futuro. Policies for a different present (Rubbettino, 2019).

Denis Maragno Iuav University of Venezia

Researcher in Urban Technology and Planning and teacher in Urban Planning and GIScience. His research focuses on the use of new digital information technologies in urban planning processes and new experimental planning for the environment and territory (climate adaptation and maritime spatial planning)".

Francesco Tomasoni HALLESS

Managing Director and co-founder of Halless. He is a member of the Digital SME Artificial Intelligence of the European Commission and professor at the SAA Business School, University of Turin. For over 8 years Director at OCTO Telematics Corp. Since 2000 he has been responsible for innovation and special market projects for large companies in Europe and USA for Ernst&Young and NTT-Data.

Michele Talia INU

Michele Talia is full professor of Urban Planning at the School of Architecture and Design of the University of Camerino. As a public administration consultant he has coordinated the design groups of the Structural Plan and Urban Regulations of the Municipality of Siena and the Strategic Plan of the Province of Teramo.
