In Italy, about the 75% of the population lives in large urban areas, consuming more than 65% of the energy produced globally and thus contributing to more than 70% of global CO2 concentrations. Therefore, cities play a key role in achieving the climate neutrality targets set by the European Green Deal by 2050, as it is in these contexts that the great climate challenge aimed at making neutral emissions from reality urban.

The convention intends to reflect on how urban areas are addressing the topic of climate neutrality, the subject of the recent Mission launched by the European Commission “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities”.

The mission intends to test paths to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 for 100 European cities, ensuring a path that is able to tow all other cities to reach the same goal by 2050.

During the conference three Italian cities that have joined the European mission will share their experiences telling how they are working to achieve this goal, paying particular attention to the relationship between urban planning and climate neutrality. The conference will also feature the story of how European programming is supporting and promoting climate transition through research projects specifically aimed at achieving climate neutrality.
