Territorial Regeneration (RT) is not only an approach to the adaptation of the building and infrastructure capital produced during the cycle of fossil modernity started in the first decades after the Second World War (a capital that has long appeared clearly and largely inadequate) but is also an adaptation of the territory as a whole to climate change, energy transition, demographic contraction, to the forms of abandonment of areas or portions of territories, to the gap between metropolitan cities and peripheral territorial systems, also through the valorisation and protection of natural capital and the economic development processes present in these territories and the related and multiple ecosystem services.

Territorial regeneration is therefore neither “building recovery” nor “urban regeneration”, even if it can partly include them. Rather, it implies that broad and systemic dimension, capable of meeting the challenges referred to above and which, precisely at the territorial scale of the vast area, finds its proper treatment. It is characterized, moreover, by an ecological and economic circularity and a high social utility and impact. Consequently, it is a candidate to be, to all intents and purposes, among the most important territorial strategies for the country.

A first conference devoted to this theme (still little explored in the literature but already the subject of approximations and experiences of various kinds) may include contributions of different kinds: (i) devoted to theoretical and conceptual definitions, with the contribution of scholars attentive to the theme; (ii) focused on planning practices already directed in that direction; (iii) focused on the main public actors of territorial regeneration.

Also significant is the fact that an insight into territorial regeneration allows us to investigate experiences and processes, as well as intercept actors from intermediate territories, going beyond the regeneration experiences of larger cities and metropolitan areas already widely practiced and documented.
