The short-term rental platform sector has grown exponentially in recent years, giving rise to a phenomenon that is reshaping the social composition of our cities, particularly – but not only – those experiencing significant tourist flows. Short-term rentals are now also widely used for business and study-related stays.
The conference will take stock of developments in the legal and regulatory framework following the Constitutional Court ruling that upheld Tuscany’s regional legislation on the sector. Tuscany was the first region in Italy to introduce a legal framework for regulating the phenomenon, building on the earlier independent initiatives undertaken by the City of Florence.
In recent weeks, the European Commission’s proposed “Affordable Housing Act” has also brought the issue back onto the European agenda, drawing on discussions held over the past year within the European Parliament on housing issues across Europe.
Legal scholars, researchers from the Polytechnic University of Turin and public administrators will discuss the issue, assessing the current regulatory framework and possible future developments, with the aim of identifying a viable course of action that could also be adopted by other public authorities.
