Founded in late 2020, Est(ra)Moenia, an association of multi-sectoral competences, acts on one of the most evolving areas of the city of Naples – the eastern area – on three dimensions: the Third Sector, Culture, Urban Regeneration.
Why eastern Naples? Because it is characterised by a crossroads of uniqueness. It overlooks the sea, now denied and to be given back to the people. It is plagued by slums and the presence of organised crime. It is bursting with positive realities and resistance, such as the Nest Theatre, directed by Francesco Di Leva. Of entrepreneurial visions, such as that of companies like Magnaghi Aeronautica, about to be redeveloped. Of university centres of global innovation, such as the AgriTech Pole and the iOS Academy, and of post-industrial sites, literally extraordinary, to be relocated in a northern European key.
Est(ra)Moenia is supported by the DIARC – Department of Architecture of the Federico II University, which is involved in a scientific re-reading of the eastern area of Naples to identify its criticalities and resources and direct the association’s activities. As part of the ongoing analysis, DIARC has already organised seminars and workshops and designed the first temporary interventions to be implemented in East Naples.
Together with the main cooperatives and realities already operating in the Third Sector towards and in the East, Est(ra)Moenia supports multidisciplinary ideas that, starting from the social, trigger development processes and opportunities for growth and enterprise for the birth of an integrated and non-divisive multicultural community. In order to ‘stitch’ the eastern suburbs to the ancient centre of Naples, Est(ra)Moenia has launched a project at the ‘gateway’ of the city: at Piazza Garibaldi, the threshold of reception between the Station, Port and Airport. Aim? To enhance the regeneration – merely urban – signed by the archistar Dominique Perrault through social regeneration interventions.
