The Municipality of Prato has been selected by the European Commission among the 100 European cities that will participate in the mission “100 smart and climate-neutral cities by 2030”, the so-called “Cities Mission”.
In the two-year period 2022-23, the mission will be able to count on approximately 360 million euros of funding from the Horizon Europe program, to launch innovation paths to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 to launch innovation paths to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 to launch synergistic paths based on innovation with the aim of achieving climate neutrality and thanks to which different sectors will be able to cooperate on intelligent, digital and other solutions. These key sectors are:
- Energy (buildings, equipment, structures) and energy production and distribution
- Transportation
- Waste management
- Industrial processes and product use
- Agriculture, forestry and other land uses
In particular, the European Commission will invite the 100 selected cities to establish “City Contracts for Climate” which will include a general plan for climate neutrality in all sectors such as energy, buildings, waste management and transport, together with the related plans for investment and will involve citizens, civil society, research organizations and the private sector across the board.
The clear and objective agreements made by cities in the City Contracts for Climate will allow them to engage with the EU, national and regional authorities and, above all, citizens to achieve this ambitious goal.
